The Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field was based at the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine from the establishment of the Field in 1996 until the Center was closed in 2024. Our Field continues to be active with national and international collaborators across the globe. Collaborators have contributed to systematic reviews of controlled clinical trials in areas such as acupuncture, massage, herbal medicine, and mind-body therapy, among others, and disseminated the results of these systematic reviews to practictioners, researchers, and patients. We have worked steadily to meet the growing demand for information about complementary therapies by identifying published clinical trials, training authors of systematic reviews, disseminating systematic reviews to the general public and healthcare providers, and conducting research to improve systematic review methodology.
Our primary aims and activities include the following:
- Help produce systematic reviews on complementary, alternative and integrative medicine (CAM) therapies
- Improve access to Cochrane reviews and disseminate systematic reviews on CAM to a worldwide audience
- Promote an evidence-based approach to healthcare in the area of CAM therapies
